The Craft and Design Selected Award!

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

There are only a few days left to vote for my jewellery designs in The Craft and Design Selected Awards. I’d love it if anyone voted for me! Click on the link and then again at the bottom of the page: www.craftmaker.co.uk/sianelizabethhughes

“These highly regarded national awards, first launched in 2009, are based on an Online Public Vote for British and Irish designer makers with work represented in Selected, craft&design’s prestigious online gallery at www.craftmaker.co.uk. The Public Vote determines six finalists in each of six categories. Specialist Invited Judges, together with the craft&design panel, subsequently assess the work of the finalists to establish one Gold Award Winner, two Silver Award Winners and three Finalists in each category, with just one person being awarded the top accolade of craft&design Maker of the Year Award.”

How exciting!

Amy Duggan Jewellery

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

This is the jewellery of a fellow jeweller Amy Duggan who I shared a studio space with in Birmingham. Amy’s work is so different and amazing!

Folds Ring
Silver, paint, lacquer

“I take a playful approach to design, allowing me to discover unique and original ideas through experimentation with space and colour. The techniques I use include folding, etching, rolling and painting precious metals. Urban landscape was the inspiration behind my current collection along with the influence of abstract art and action painting. ”

Origin 2010

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Origin is the Crafts Council’s annual showcase of original contemporary craft, bringing together 220 of the most innovative UK and international makers for 1 week. It offers visitors a rare chance to buy directly from the makers and meet them face to face. I have visited Origin in the past at Somerset House and the diversity of craft is amazing and would thoroughly  recommend a visit!

I’m more than a bit excited about this craft fair as there are so many great things to see and try. The Contemporary Craft Fair is a truly inspirational mix of some of the finest crafts people in the UK. I will be showing all three of my jewellery collections all of which will have one-off pieces on display. I will try and take some photos to pop on the blog of the contemporary craft fair for all to see!

A Bloomin’ success

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

‘Best of Brum’ Exhibition @ The RBSA Gallery, Birmingham was a great success and many of my jewellery/silversmithing friends and collegues also exhibited including: ALICE GOW, ANNA LORENZ, CLAIRE PARDOE, ESTHER LORD, JO POND, KATHERINE CAMPBELL LEGG, KATHLEEN BAIRD, KERRY O’CONNOR, LOUISE CHESSHIRE
MELANIE TOMLINSON, MICHELE WHITE, MIRANDA SHARPE, RAJESH GOGNA, RITA PATEL, SHONA MARSH

This piece was my star attraction:

It’s a 4 layer bloom necklace, the petals are silver that has been oxidised/blackened and each layer has an 18ct Yellow Gold petal.

I picked my work up this week and the new exhibition was full of delicious cupcakes! (knitted, cast and ceramic however!) The new exhibition is called:

“The Art of Dining”
“Explore the relationship between food and object. Including jewellery, ceramics and textiles, this exhibition will investigate the social importance of food and dining.  It includes direct representations of food and tableware that is purely decorative. ‘The Art of Dining’ will be a sumptuous exhibition and an intriguing insight into the varied techniques and skills utilised by makers in their creative practices.

I exhibited for the first time at ‘Made’ Brighton Craft Fair last year and fell in love with Brighton and the people! This year ‘Made’ was held from the 19th – 22nd November at The Brighton Corn Exchange. The artwork on the posters is always fab and this year is no exception………..
